At a time when Uganda’s young entrepreneurs are increasingly venturing beyond traditional businesses, Bukenya Sulaiman has sought to combine entrepreneurship with cultural preservation and community empowerment.
Born on February 15, 1986, Bukenya is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and cultural advocate who has built business interests spanning electronics, hospitality, agro-processing, real estate and media.
He is the founder and chairman of Uganda Online Investments Ltd, a diversified business group established in 2015, and director of Uganda Online Media, a platform that focuses on developmental news, culture and positive stories about Uganda.
From humble beginnings
Bukenya was born at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala and raised in Busega-Nateete. He lost his parents at a young age, an experience that he says shaped his determination and commitment to helping others overcome difficult circumstances.
Despite the challenges of growing up without parental support, Bukenya pursued his education and later developed an interest in business, media, culture and community development.
He studied at Makerere University and later undertook short courses in media, ethics and governance at the University of Amsterdam and psychology at Yale University.
He also holds financial certifications, which have contributed to his approach to business and investment.
Building a diversified business
Bukenya founded Uganda Online Investments Ltd in 2015, beginning what has since grown into a diversified portfolio of businesses.
The group has interests in electronics, hospitality, agro-processing, real estate and media.
Through its electronics business, the company supplies consumer electronics to households and businesses, while its hospitality ventures include guesthouses and hotel-related services.
In agro-processing, Bukenya has focused on value addition, seeking to support local agricultural production and create opportunities for farmers and other players in the agricultural value chain.
The group’s real estate interests include commercial and residential property development.
Its media arm, Uganda Online Media, focuses on news and information, with particular emphasis on Ugandan culture, success stories and social development.
For Bukenya, business is not only about generating profits but also creating employment and contributing to economic development.
His approach seeks to bridge some of the gaps between rural and urban communities by creating opportunities through business, entrepreneurship and information.
Promoting Buganda heritage
Away from business, Bukenya has emerged as an advocate for Buganda’s cultural heritage.
He is the founder and organiser of the Buganda Expo, an annual event intended to promote traditional crafts, tourism and innovation within the Kingdom.
He is also associated with Miss Tourism Buganda, a pageant designed to showcase the beauty, talent and tourism potential of Buganda.
Through these initiatives, Bukenya seeks to demonstrate that cultural preservation can coexist with modern technology, entrepreneurship and economic development.
His work is based on the belief that traditional values and heritage can provide a foundation for modern economic opportunities, particularly for young people.
Giving back to the community
Bukenya’s work also extends to philanthropy and community development.
He has supported financial literacy campaigns across Buganda and has donated food, clothing and scholastic materials to vulnerable children.
Rather than focusing only on short-term assistance, his approach to philanthropy also emphasises self-reliance and financial empowerment.
He supports initiatives aimed at equipping women and young people with entrepreneurship skills while using cultural education as another avenue for community empowerment.
His belief is that young people and families can improve their livelihoods when they have access to the knowledge and opportunities needed to make informed economic decisions.
Culture, faith and leadership
Bukenya maintains links with members of the Buganda royal family and participates in cultural activities aimed at promoting unity and preserving the Kingdom’s heritage.
He is a supporter of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and has worked with members of the royal establishment in cultural initiatives.
His activities also extend to Uganda’s Muslim community. As a practicing Muslim, Bukenya participates in Islamic activities and maintains an association with Prince Dr Kassim Nakibinge, a prominent Muslim leader.
These cultural and religious ties have shaped his approach to community engagement and public service.
A new generation of entrepreneur
Bukenya’s career reflects an attempt to bring together several areas that are often treated separately: business, culture, media and philanthropy.
Through his companies, he seeks to create employment and invest in sectors that contribute to Uganda’s economic growth.
Through his cultural initiatives, he promotes Buganda’s heritage and tourism potential, while his philanthropic activities focus on supporting vulnerable communities and empowering young people and women.
His story is one of an entrepreneur seeking to use business as a platform not only for wealth creation but also for cultural promotion and social development.
As Uganda continues to grapple with youth unemployment, limited access to capital and the challenge of preserving cultural heritage amid rapid technological change, Bukenya’s model seeks to demonstrate how entrepreneurship, culture and community development can be pursued together.
