In a renewed push to bridge Uganda’s digital divide, MTN Uganda is taking its mobile classroom back on the road, with plans to equip 2,000 Ugandans with practical digital skills in the 2025/26 programme cycle.
Through its philanthropic arm, the MTN Foundation, in partnership with Maendeleo Foundation, the telecom giant is expanding the reach of its flagship MTN Internet Bus initiative to 10 communities across six districts. The move signals a deepening commitment to digital inclusion as Uganda accelerates its shift toward online services in government, banking, education and business.
The MTN Internet Bus — a fully equipped computer lab on wheels — will host intensive 10-day training camps in Kampala, Kiryandongo, Rwampara, Bushenyi, Adjumani and Amuru throughout March and April. Since its launch in 2022, the programme has trained more than 5,933 people in 44 communities, steadily building a pipeline of digitally skilled citizens.
Participants will receive hands-on training in essential digital competencies, including computer literacy, internet navigation, email communication, spreadsheets, cloud collaboration tools, graphic design and e-learning platforms. With cyber risks on the rise, the curriculum also places strong emphasis on online safety and digital security.
“MTN Uganda believes that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life,” said Bryan Mbasa, Senior Manager at the MTN Foundation. “Through the MTN Internet Bus, we are bringing digital skills directly to communities, empowering young people and women to fully participate in the digital economy. This initiative reflects our ambition to drive inclusive growth and ensure that no one is left behind as Uganda embraces digital transformation.”
Community-based institutions will host the training camps, including Kabalagala One-Stop Youth Centre in Kampala, Kanyonyore Vocational School in Rwampara, St. Mary’s Technical Institute in Kyamuhunga, Bushenyi, and the Global Refugee Initiative in Kiryandongo.
Trainees complete nine days of digital business modules before graduating on the 10th day with certificates. Beyond the classroom, participants are enrolled onto the MTN Skills Academy, enabling continued learning through advanced and self-paced digital courses.
Established in 2007, the MTN Foundation manages MTN Uganda’s corporate social investment portfolio, with digital inclusion increasingly positioned at the heart of its strategy to expand economic opportunity and long-term participation in Uganda’s growing digital economy.
