More than 200 riders of electric motorcycle company Spiro took to the streets of Kampala in a Green Boda Boda ride to mark the company’s partnership with the Rwenzori Marathon as the event’s official Green Mobility Partner for 2026.
The partnership will see Spiro deploy electric motorcycles during the marathon in Kasese to transport and support key officials, including journalists and members of the medical team.
The initiative is intended to demonstrate how clean mobility can contribute to a healthier environment for runners, spectators and communities hosting the event.
Amos Wekesa, the co-founder of the Rwenzori Marathon, said the partnership goes beyond sport by linking personal health with environmental conservation.
“The Rwenzori Marathon is one of the world’s unique sports, where people run across the Equator. This partnership with Spiro is more than running; it is about connecting personal health with environmental health,” Wekesa said.
“We are proud to have Spiro on board as our green mobility partner, promoting green and clean transport during the marathon.”
Bruce Mucunguzi, Spiro Uganda’s deputy country head, said the company’s participation was aimed at promoting the adoption of cleaner transport as part of efforts to protect the environment.
“As an electric mobility solutions provider, we believe that a healthy population starts with a healthy environment. There is an urgent need to embrace clean transport, and Spiro is taking the message of clean mobility to the heart of Kasese,” Mucunguzi said.
He said the marathon provides an opportunity to demonstrate the role electric mobility can play in reducing carbon emissions while protecting the natural beauty of the Rwenzori region.
Mucunguzi added that promoting an active lifestyle should go hand in hand with creating clean and healthy environments, supported by clean air, safe spaces and communities free from unnecessary pollution.
Spiro says it has deployed more than 30,000 electric motorcycles on Ugandan roads as it seeks to replace fossil-fuel-powered motorcycles with electric alternatives.
The company operates a battery-swapping network that allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for charged ones, reducing downtime and supporting the adoption of electric motorcycles.
The partnership with the Rwenzori Marathon comes amid growing calls for cleaner transport as Uganda’s urban centres experience rising numbers of vehicles and increasing pressure on the environment.
Electric mobility is increasingly being promoted as one of the practical ways of reducing transport-related emissions and improving air quality while supporting healthier urban communities.
For the Rwenzori Marathon, the partnership also places environmental sustainability at the centre of an event that brings together runners and visitors to the Rwenzori region.
