The Uganda Police Force has arrested 29 individuals suspected of involvement in the murder of Chemonges Suleiman, a police officer attached to Bisheshe Police Station in Ibanda District. Officer Chemonges had been deployed to provide security during the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus in Kambogo Cell, Bisheshe Division.
Kahangire, who had been accused of attempted murder, died while on remand at Nyabuhikye Government Prison after evading arrest for some time.
According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, Chemonges was attacked by a mob at the funeral. The crowd reportedly blamed him for Kahangire’s arrest and subsequent imprisonment. Despite firing warning shots in an attempt to defend himself, Chemonges was overpowered and killed.
Police later recovered an SMG rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition from the scene. Chemonges’ body was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.
“We have since arrested 29 suspects connected to the murder and are continuing the search for additional perpetrators. The Uganda Police Force condemns this violent act and assures the public that all those involved will be held accountable,” Rusoke stated.
