Uganda earned US$ 167.78 million (Shs 616.7 billion) from the export of 555,756 60-kilogram bags of coffee to various international markets, according to the February 2025 monthly coffee report.

The average price per kilogram of coffee was US$ 5.03 (Shs 18,488), an increase of US cents 29 from US$ 4.74 (Shs 17,422) in January 2025, and US$ 1.86 (Shs 6,836) higher than US$ 3.17 (Shs 11,652) recorded in February 2024. This represents an increase of 27.93% in quantity and 103.25% in value compared to February of the previous year.

Annual Performance (March 2024 – February 2025)

Over the 12-month period, Uganda exported 6.57 million bags of coffee worth US$ 1.72 billion (Shs 6.3 trillion). This marks an increase of 6.99% in quantity and 70.71% in value compared to 6.14 million bags worth US$ 999.84 million (Shs 3.6 trillion) exported in the previous year (March 2023 – February 2024).

Exporter Performance

Ten companies accounted for 71% of total export volume, up from 70% in January 2025. The highest price fetched was US$ 8.18 (Shs 30,067) per kilogram for Bugisu C/PB coffee.

Top Exporters (February 2025 market share vs. January 2025 in brackets): Ugacof (U) Ltd: 12.96% (15.30%); Olam Uganda Ltd: 11.34% (7.32%); Jber Coffee Ltd: 6.85% (6.23%); Kawacom (U) Ltd: 6.62% (10.65%); Touton Uganda Ltd: 6.62% (4.21%); Ideal Quality Commodities Ltd: 6.32% (5.81%).

Export Trading Company (U) Ltd: 5.28% (2.10%); Louis Dreyfus Company (U) Ltd: 5.51% (6.90%); Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd: 4.78% (5.47%) and Ibero (U) Ltd: 3.70% (4.78%).

Out of 61 exporters in February, 34 exported only Robusta, while six exported only Arabica.

Exports by Destination

Italy remained the top destination with a 45.17% market share, up from 36.94% in January.

Other leading markets: Germany: 8.71% (8.30%); India: 8.36% (9.76%); Belgium: 7.13% (11.90%) and Sudan: 6.17% (9.41%).

The top 10 export destinations accounted for 89.32% of total exports, down slightly from 91.31% the previous month. Exports to African countries totaled 53,720 bags (10%), down from 73,324 bags (13%) in January. Key African markets included Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa.

Europe remained Uganda’s largest regional market with a 74% share, up from 69% in January.

Top Foreign Buyers

The top 10 international buyers held a 59.88% market share, slightly down from 60.12% in January.

Sucafina: 13.48% (15.54%); Olam International: 12.36% (7.68%); Louis Dreyfus: 7.91% (6.90%); Ecom Agro Industrialist: 6.68% (10.34%); Touton SA: 6.62% (4.39%); Bernhard Rothfos: 3.87% (5.08%); Pacorini Silocaf: 2.39% (1.65%); Koninklijke Douwe: 2.33% (0.98%); Strauss: 2.21% (1.95%) and CCL Products: 2.04% (2.52%).

Coffee Outlook

Coffee exports for the coming month are projected at 450,000 60-kg bags. The main harvest season north of the equator, along with the fly crop in Greater Masaka and South-Western regions, is nearing completion.
