With the 2025/2026 General Elections on the horizon, Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) has rolled out a detailed roadmap for the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) elections. Targeting Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and Youth, these polls aim to deepen inclusivity and strengthen grassroots representation in governance.

According to a press release issued on May 23, 2025, the electoral activities for SIGs are scheduled to begin on June 2, starting with candidate nominations at the village level. The elections will be conducted in multiple phases through June, July, and August, concluding with National Youth Council and regional delegate elections by the end of August.

Organized, Inclusive Phases for SIGs Elections

To ensure a smooth and participatory process, the EC has broken down the elections into clearly defined stages:

Commission Urges Stakeholder Engagement

The EC is calling on all parties—aspiring candidates, political actors, civil society, and citizens—to actively participate and adhere to the official calendar. Transparency and cooperation, the Commission notes, are essential for a successful democratic process.

Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to fair and credible elections, stressing that SIGs polls are a cornerstone of Uganda’s inclusive democratic journey.

“These elections go beyond simply filling seats,” said Justice Byabakama. “They are a deliberate effort to uplift communities whose voices have often been overlooked, ensuring they have a hand in shaping national and local leadership.”

As the country moves steadily toward the broader General Elections, the effective management of the SIGs elections will serve as a vital indicator of Uganda’s democratic maturity and commitment to participation for all.
