The Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (UIBFS), in partnership with the School of Business at Makerere University, is co-hosting its inaugural Research Conference under the theme “Bridging Knowledge and Practice: Research as a Driver of Financial Sector Transformation.”

The event brings together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, academics, researchers, and students to discuss and showcase research that can drive practical transformation within Uganda’s financial sector.

Speaking at the conference, UIBFS Chief Executive Officer Goretti Masadde emphasized the importance of narrowing the gap between research and its application in the industry. She highlighted the conference as a significant milestone in the Institute’s transformation journey and announced the launch of the Research Fund—an initiative designed to support industry-driven research.

“This conference represents more than just a meeting of minds; it is a call to action for academia and industry to work hand in hand. Research must not remain on shelves—it must drive policy, innovation, and practice across our financial sector,” said Masadde.

UIBFS Board Chair and Managing Director of Housing Finance Bank, Mr. Michael K. Mugabi, reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to fostering a strong research culture in the financial sector.

“As UIBFS continues its transformation, this conference symbolizes our commitment to thought leadership and to shaping a financial services industry that is informed by data,” he noted.

Delivering the keynote address, the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Michael Atingi-Ego, affirmed the central bank’s support for initiatives that integrate research into financial sector stability and innovation. He commended UIBFS and Makerere University for taking a bold step toward institutionalizing financial sector research.

The conference was officially opened by the Guest of Honour, the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, who praised the organizers for creating a platform that will shape future policy, drive product development, and promote sustainable financial sector growth.

The one-day event features panel discussions, academic paper presentations, and the unveiling of the UIBFS Research Agenda and Book of Abstracts. Key thematic areas include: Digital Finance & Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change and Monetary Policy and The Role of Research in Driving Financial Sector Growth.

Through this initiative, UIBFS and Makerere University reaffirm their shared commitment to establishing a Research Centre of Excellence that will foster knowledge creation, capacity building, and applied research solutions for Uganda and the wider region.
