The government has procured brand new vehicles worth Shs35.2 billion to support the work of District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors across the country, the Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has announced.

Speaking on September 4, 2025, in response to a petition by the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA), Minister Magyezi said the move aims to boost service delivery by improving the mobility of local leaders within their jurisdictions.

“Government has procured brand new vehicles (Toyota Double Cabin pick-ups) for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors. The first batch of 90 vehicles will be in the country by the end of September 2025, while the last batch is expected in November 2025,” Magyezi revealed.

The vehicles, all Toyota Double Cabin pick-ups, are intended to facilitate monitoring and supervision of government programs at the grassroots level.

The Minister also commended the national leadership for supporting the procurement through a supplementary budget.

“We thank H.E. the President, Cabinet, and Parliament for appropriating Shs35.2 billion in the supplementary budget in April this year, for this purpose,” Magyezi said.

He emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance systems and enhancing efficiency in the delivery of essential public services.

According to the Ministry of Local Government, the vehicles will be distributed in phases. The first 90 units are expected to arrive in September 2025, with the remaining batch arriving in November 2025.

The distribution is expected to cover all local government heads, ensuring that each district, city, and municipality is adequately equipped for field operations and administrative work.
