A number of sitting Members of Parliament, including Busiro East MP Medard Sseggona, Makindye East MP Allan Ssewanyana, and Mityana District Woman MP Joyce Bagala, have failed to secure party endorsements from the National Unity Platform (NUP) ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

The announcement was made by the NUP Election Management Committee, chaired by Harriet Chemutai, which released the official list of candidates who will represent the party in various parliamentary races.

According to the list, Sseggona has been replaced by popular local singer Mathias Walukagga, who will now carry the NUP flag in the Busiro East constituency.

Shamim Malende has retained the NUP ticket for Kampala Woman MP, fending off competition from Zahara Luyilika, who had also been vying for the position. Luyilika has instead been awarded the party’s ticket for Makindye West Constituency, a seat currently held by Allan Aloysius Ssewanyana, who has not secured a ticket for re-election.

In a surprising twist, Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko, who had earlier announced his withdrawal from the 2026 race, made a U-turn and re-entered the contest just days before the NUP finalized its nominations.

In Mityana District, sitting Woman MP Joyce Bagala has been dropped and replaced by Mukisa Proscovia as the party’s flag bearer.

Another notable shift is in Kawempe South, previously represented by Kazibwe Bashir Mbaziira, where the NUP ticket has been handed to Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, the elder brother of NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the current MP for Nakawa West and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has retained the NUP ticket, affirming his central role in the party’s parliamentary strategy.

In Nansana Municipality, journalist and political newcomer Zambali Brasio Mukasa has been awarded the NUP ticket, replacing incumbent Nsereko Wakayima Musoke.

Meanwhile, NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya has entered the race and secured the party’s flag for Kampala Central, a high-profile constituency currently represented by Muhammad Nsereko, an independent MP.

The changes reflect NUP’s ongoing internal vetting process, aimed at refreshing its parliamentary lineup ahead of a highly anticipated 2026 general election.
