There was commotion at the High Court after Mariam Obeid, the daughter of Obeid Lutale, one of Dr. Kizza Besigye’s co-accused, broke down in protest over her father’s continued incarceration.

The outburst came moments after Justice Emmanuel Baguma declined to refer the case of Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused to the Constitutional Court for interpretation.

“You have wasted our time for one whole year! We have been coming here for a year, but you keep reading one script. Is this a theatre? I will speak!” she shouted in anger before being restrained and escorted out by security personnel.

The scene quickly turned chaotic as police and Uganda Prisons officers forcibly removed her from the courtroom amid scuffles and resistance.

Daily star has learned that Mariam who is also contesting for Rubaga North MP seat is currently held at Central Police Station (CPS).

Earlier, Dr. Kizza Besigye, Obeid Lutale, and Captain Denis Oola had asked the court to refer their treason case to the Constitutional Court, arguing that it raised constitutional questions that required interpretation.

According to the charge sheet, Dr. Besigye and his co-accused were allegedly abducted in Nairobi in 2024 after attending a book launch hosted by Kenyan politician Martha Karua.

Prosecutors allege that the trio later traveled to Switzerland, Greece, and Kenya, where they held physical and virtual meetings aimed at plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government, in collaboration with operatives based in Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala.

They are also accused of failing to report knowledge of treasonous activity between 2023 and November 2024, contrary to Section 11 of the Penal Code Act.

Developing story.
