Vladimir Putin has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei following his election as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.

In a message sent on March 9, 2026, the Russian president extended his sincere congratulations to the cleric, formally addressing him as the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“Please accept my sincere congratulations on your election as Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Putin wrote in the message.

Putin noted that Khamenei assumes leadership at a challenging moment for the country, saying Iran is currently confronting armed aggression and that the position will require courage and dedication.

He expressed confidence that the new leader would continue the legacy of his father and help unite the Iranian people during difficult times.

“I am confident that you will honorably continue your father’s work and unite the Iranian people in the face of severe trials,” the Russian leader stated.

Putin also reaffirmed Russia’s support for Tehran, emphasizing the close relationship between the two countries.

“For my part, I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends. Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner of the Islamic Republic,” he said.

The Russian president concluded his message by wishing Khamenei success in addressing the challenges facing the country and good health as he begins his tenure as Iran’s top authority.

“I wish you success in solving the difficult tasks facing you, as well as good health and strength of spirit,” the message concluded.
