The Orthodox Church in Uganda has been tasked with leading the preparations for the 71st birthday celebrations of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, highlighting the growing role of faith communities in Buganda’s cultural milestones.
The organizing committee was unveiled by Archbishop Jeronimos Muzeeyi at the church headquarters in Namungoona. Fr. Bbosa will chair the committee, assisted by Theodore Ssekikubo, with support from the Buganda Kingdom to ensure the event blends spiritual reverence with royal tradition.
Kabaka Mutebi will celebrate his birthday on April 13 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral. Each year, the Kabaka chooses a different religious denomination to host the official thanksgiving prayers—a tradition that underscores the kingdom’s inclusive approach to faith. Last year, the celebrations were held at Lubaga Cathedral under Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere.
Archbishop Muzeeyi expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the Orthodox Church:“It is an honor to organize the Kabaka’s birthday celebrations. We are committed to ensuring the event reflects the dignity, heritage, and significance of this occasion,” he said.
He pledged that the church would work closely with the kingdom and all stakeholders to make the celebrations a source of pride for the people of Buganda.
Fr. Bbosa, chair of the organizing committee, confirmed that preparations are already underway.
“We are coordinating with the kingdom and other partners to ensure that every detail is in place for a seamless and meaningful celebration,” he said.
Vice-chair Theodore Ssekikubo emphasized that the focus of the event goes beyond ceremony.
“Our goal is to honor the Kabaka while promoting unity and togetherness among the people of Buganda,” Ssekikubo said.
As preparations continue, the Orthodox Church’s role reflects a broader trend of collaboration between faith institutions and the kingdom, ensuring that tradition, spirituality, and community pride converge in celebrating Buganda’s monarch.
