The High Court Criminal Division in Kampala is set to hear the defence of Molly Katanga in a high-profile case involving the alleged murder of her husband, Henry Katanga.
Molly is accused of shooting her husband dead on November 2, 2023, at their home in Mbuya, Nakawa Division in Kampala, a case that has drawn widespread public attention.
For nearly two years, she followed court proceedings remotely from Luzira Women’s Prison via Zoom. During that period, the court ruled that she had a case to answer, paving the way for the defence phase.
Her recent physical appearance in court marks a significant turning point, as she stood before Lady Justice Rosette Kania Comfort to formally begin presenting her defence.
With the trial entering a critical stage, focus now shifts to her testimony as the court seeks to establish what exactly transpired on the night of her husband’s death.
Molly is jointly charged with her two daughters, Martha Nkwanzi and Patricia Kakwanza, as well as George Amanyire, a shamba boy, and Charles Otai, a health worker.
Nkwanzi and Kakwanza are accused of tampering with evidence at the crime scene, allegedly rendering it unfit for judicial examination, while Amanyire and Otai are said to have assisted individuals involved in the crime.
Last month, the four co-accused were granted cash bail of Shs 2 million each, with their sureties bonded at Shs 20 million and ordered to surrender their passports.
The trial of Molly and her co-accused is scheduled to continue, with proceedings expected to intensify as the court hears the defence.
