President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has marked the 52nd birthday of Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba with a reflective tribute that places the army chief’s life firmly within the narrative of Uganda’s liberation struggle and the development of the armed forces.

In his  message, Museveni struck a personal tone, expressing gratitude to God for his family and commending First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni for raising their children during the bush war years of 1981–86.

“I thank Maama for looking after them especially for the years 1981–86 when she was the only parent near them,” he said, noting the sacrifices made during the insurgency period.

The President also acknowledged Ugandans and other Africans who supported his family and political movement over the years, describing their role as part of a broader struggle that shaped the country’s current leadership.

Focusing on Gen. Muhoozi, Museveni described the CDF as a product of the resistance era, saying his upbringing was deeply rooted in the liberation struggle.

“These children, in particular Muhoozi, were born in the resistance, grew up in the resistance, and… have made significant contribution to the resistance,” he said.

He credited Muhoozi with strengthening the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, particularly in fighting internal corruption and improving operational efficiency.

Museveni also revisited the circumstances of Muhoozi’s birth in 1974 at Ocean Road Hospital in Dar es Salaam, drawing parallels with major global political developments at the time. He recalled informing Mozambican liberation leader Samora Machel, who was then preoccupied with events in Portugal.

He referenced the Carnation Revolution, noting how the fall of Portugal’s dictatorship and the wave of decolonisation overshadowed personal milestones during that period.

In a broader reflection, Museveni pointed to what he called “historic coincidences,” linking the birth dates of his children to key global events, including World War II Victory Day and African independence milestones.

He concluded the message with birthday wishes to the CDF and his family: “Congratulations Muhoozi, his wife, children and siblings on this milestone.”

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba remains one of the most visible figures in Uganda’s military establishment, with the President’s remarks once again highlighting his long-standing connection to the country’s liberation history and security leadership.
