Kampala Health Workers Test Positive for Ebola as  gov’t  Intensifies Response

The Ministry of Health has confirmed two new cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) involving Ugandan health workers attached to a private health facility in Kampala, triggering renewed surveillance and contact tracing efforts in the capital.

The ministry said the two patients had been isolated and admitted to a designated treatment unit where they are currently receiving care.

“The two new confirmed cases are Ugandan health workers working in a private health facility in Kampala. Both patients have been admitted to the designated treatment unit and are now receiving care,” the statement signed by Director General Health Services, Charles Olaro, reads in part.

The ministry said response teams had immediately begun listing and tracing all contacts linked to the confirmed cases in an effort to prevent further spread of the disease.

The confirmation of infections among frontline health workers is likely to heighten concerns within the health sector, given the increased exposure medical personnel face while handling suspected and confirmed Ebola patients.

Health authorities urged the public to remain alert and report anyone exhibiting symptoms associated with Ebola to nearby health facilities for immediate medical attention.

“Early detection and treatment greatly improve chances of survival and help prevent further spread of the disease,” Dr Olaro said.

Symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease commonly include high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue, muscle pain and, in severe cases, unexplained bleeding.

The latest cases come as Uganda continues to maintain surveillance systems developed during previous Ebola outbreaks, with authorities emphasizing rapid detection, isolation and contact tracing as critical measures in containing infections.

The Ministry of Health did not immediately disclose the identities of the infected health workers or the specific private health facility where they were employed.

Health officials, however, said monitoring and response operations remain ongoing.
