Proceedings in the case against former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have been temporarily halted after he failed to appear in court due to illness.

The matter came up before Makindye Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera, who adjourned the case to July 9 after being informed that Lukwago is undergoing medical investigations and treatment.

According to the Uganda Prisons Service, Lukwago was unable to attend court as he is currently receiving specialized medical care. His lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, told court that prison authorities had formally communicated the development, confirming that their client could not be produced in court.

Lukwago is facing charges of misprision of treason.

The charges stem from allegations that between 2021 and 2024, while in Nairobi, Kenya, Lukwago and several others were aware of plans to commit treason but failed to report the matter to authorities. The prosecution claims that those allegedly involved include Joel Wakayima, Frank Atukunda, Hajj Obed Kamulegeya, and Dr Kizza Besigye.

Lukwago’s legal troubles began on June 15, 2026, when security agencies, including the police and the Special Forces Command (SFC), raided his home in Wakaliga, a Kampala suburb. He was subsequently arrested and detained at an undisclosed location.

Two days later, on June 17, Lukwago was transferred to Kira Division Police Station, where he was formally charged. He was held for about five hours before being arraigned before the Makindye Magistrates Court.

The case has since attracted significant public attention due to Lukwago’s political profile and the gravity of the charges.

Court is expected to resume hearing of the matter on July 9, subject to Lukwago’s health condition.
