Uganda prepares to bid farewell to one of its most distinguished legal minds, former Supreme Court Justice and constitutional scholar, Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, who passed away on July 15 at the age of 85.
His final journey will culminate on Tuesday, July 29, when he will be laid to rest at his cherished home in Buziga, Kampala—a place where, in his later years, he often reflected on the past, penned legal thoughts, and hosted debates on justice and governance.
But before that final moment, the nation will pause to honour a man whose life was deeply interwoven with Uganda’s modern legal history. A series of commemorative events will begin on Wednesday, when the Supreme Court—where he once issued landmark rulings—will hold a solemn tribute in his honour. It is here that the judiciary will reflect on his legacy, particularly his influential role in crafting Uganda’s 1995 Constitution.
The tributes continue on Friday, when mourners will gather at his residence from 11 a.m., followed by a private memorial and eulogies from family and close associates. It will be a time for personal stories, quiet tears, and heartfelt remembrance of a man who balanced fierce intellect with disarming humility.
A church service at All Saints Cathedral will be held on Monday, starting at 9 a.m., bringing together members of the legal fraternity, academia, and the public to pay their respects. Later that evening, an official vigil will be held at Kabojja International School, drawing guests from across the country’s legal, educational, and political circles.
The final public ceremony will take place on Tuesday morning at Kabojja grounds, starting at 10 a.m., after which the revered jurist will be laid to rest at his family estate.
Prof. Kanyeihamba’s passing marks the end of an era—but through the lives he shaped, the laws he helped forge, and the principles he stood for, his voice will echo long beyond the grave.
