The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will undergo changes to its scheduling, with the tournament now set to be held every four years instead of the current two-year cycle, Daily Star has learned.

The revelation was made by Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe.

“Hosting will go to Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. The AFCON that follows will be held in 2028. AFCON will now take place once every four years,” Motsepe said.

The changes will also see the shelving of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be replaced by the African Nations League. The new competition will be staged during FIFA international windows in September, October, and November.

“In 2029, after the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, we will have the first African Nations League. The best African players from across the continent and those based abroad, including in Europe, will participate, and the venue for the final will be decided later,” he added.
