Former BBC journalist Allan Kasujja has expressed his readiness to steer the Uganda Media Centre forward following his recent appointment as Executive Director.
Last month, Yoweri Museveni directed the Minister of Information, Communication Technology and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, to appoint Kasujja to the position.
In a letter addressed to Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, Museveni said he had received a letter dated November 27, 2025, regarding the leadership of the Media Centre.
“I was not aware of the ongoing manoeuvres. However, some weeks ago we discussed the idea of Allan Kasujja with you. I have already directed Dr. Chris Baryomunsi to appoint Allan Kasujja as Executive Director of the Media Centre. We can then look at the others,” Museveni wrote in a letter dated December 27, 2025.
“By copy of this letter, I direct Dr. Chris Baryomunsi to initiate the procedures for appointing Allan Kasujja and, additionally, assess others who could serve as deputy,” the President added.
Earlier on Sunday, Kasujja thanked Museveni for what he described as a great opportunity to serve Uganda.
“It’s a tremendous honour, and I consider it the biggest mission I have ever undertaken. I believe in Uganda. I wish to pay tribute to Ofwono Opondo and the team he led at the Uganda Media Centre for the work they did,” Kasujja said.
He also applauded Obed Katureebe, who has been serving as Acting Executive Director of the Media Centre since Opondo moved to his current assignment.
“Now that I’ve had the opportunity to listen and learn, it’s obvious that it has not been easy. We aim to build a robust, coherent and effective institution that will be the vanguard of Uganda’s ten-fold growth ambition,” he added.
Kasujja replaces Opondo, who resigned in April 2025 after announcing his intention to join elective politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Opondo has since been elected unopposed as the Member of Parliament representing Older Persons for Eastern Uganda.
Kasujja began his media career in the 1990s at Sanyu FM and has worked across television and radio in Uganda.
He previously hosted the morning show The Big Breakfast on Capital FM alongside Jackie Lumbasi and Ramesh Gabalsing. He has also presented the Ugandan version of the TV game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? since 2011.
Since 2012, Kasujja has been based in London, where he has been a regular presenter on Newsday on the BBC.
On January 15, 2016, Kasujja also co-moderated Uganda’s first-ever televised presidential debate alongside Nancy Kacungira.
