The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of his bodyguard Edward Ssebuufu, widely known as Eddie Mutwe, following what he describes as severe torture.

Earlier this week, Mutwe was formally charged with aggravated robbery, just days after the military announced his detention. According to Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Mutwe was abducted in Mukono by unidentified armed men traveling in a Toyota Hiace van, commonly referred to as a “drone.”

The alleged abduction occurred ahead of the planned launch of a youth protest campaign dubbed the “Youth Protest Vote,” which was scheduled to take place on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the NUP headquarters.

Speaking earlier today, Bobi Wine described Mutwe’s condition as dire. “He is rotting away. His wounds are still fresh. We urgently call on all Ugandans of goodwill to demand Eddie Mutwe’s immediate release so he can receive specialized medical treatment,” he said.

“He was sent to prison instead of a hospital. We saw him—he was brutally tortured. He endured three days of torture, and on the third day, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba personally participated in the abuse. Eddie was tortured in Muhoozi’s presence and was forced to learn Runyankole,” Bobi Wine alleged.

He further claimed that Mutwe was subjected to electrocution, waterboarding, and other forms of inhumane treatment. “If he survives, he will one day tell his story,” Bobi Wine said.

“He was forced to salute a picture of President Museveni daily. He was stripped naked, and when he was finally given something to wear, it was a T-shirt bearing Museveni’s image,” he added.

Bobi Wine also mentioned a list released yesterday, naming journalists allegedly involved in fabricating charges against NUP members. He clarified that Gertrude Mutyaba of NTV was mistakenly included in that list.

“I want to publicly correct that error and thank the journalists who have disassociated themselves from this scheme after realizing they were being manipulated. I urge the rest to speak out against this brutality and torture,” he concluded.
