A suspected fire accident at the home of flamboyant city socialite Brian Kirumira, popularly known as Brian White, has evolved into a full-blown criminal investigation, leading to the arrest of four people — including a doctor, a nurse, and Brian White’s wife.
Police confirmed the detention of Dr. Joyce Irene Nambalirwa, proprietor of Mabirizi Nursing Home, alongside Nakato Naava, Daphine Abaho, and Daisy Nalunga, who is believed to be Brian White’s legally wedded wife.
The arrests stem from the suspicious death of 25-year-old Caroline Nalubwama, reportedly Brian White’s girlfriend. Her death was initially attributed to burns sustained in a household fire, but investigators now believe the account may have been fabricated.
“We have four suspects in custody. Investigations show that the incident actually occurred on October 22, not October 24 as earlier stated, and it was only reported to police on October 27,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, during a briefing at Naguru Police Headquarters.
Nalubwama was first admitted to Mabirizi Nursing Home, where Dr. Nambalirwa allegedly delayed her referral to Kiruddu Hospital, reportedly citing unpaid medical bills. Police sources claim the delay may have contributed to her death and that the clinic allegedly confiscated a laptop belonging to one of her caretakers as “collateral.”
Investigators say inconsistencies in the timeline and attempts to handle the incident discreetly have raised further suspicion.
“The delay in seeking proper medical attention and failure to promptly report the matter suggest that the suspects were attempting to conceal key details,” Owoyesigyire added.
Adding to the intrigue, police confirmed that Brian White himself is under hospital guard at a private facility along Interval Road.
“We only assign guards to individuals of interest in ongoing investigations,” Owoyesigyire said, a statement that has fueled speculation about the socialite’s possible involvement.
Sources close to the probe say detectives are examining whether the fire was accidental or staged, and whether Nalubwama’s injuries align with the reported circumstances.
The case file has been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for review, who will determine whether formal charges will be filed against the suspects.
“Further updates will be communicated once the RSA provides guidance,” Owoyesigyire concluded.
