C-Care IHK is taking a bold step to revolutionize cancer treatment in Uganda by partnering with top Indian oncology institutions, including Gleneagles Hospitals and Fortis Hospitals. The collaboration aims to strengthen local expertise in Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and precision cancer therapy, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for advanced treatment.
The partnership was showcased during a high-level Continuing Medical Education (CME) session in Kampala, featuring renowned hemato-oncologist Dr. Rajeev Vijayakumar. The CME highlighted the integration of genomics-driven therapies into Uganda’s healthcare system, enabling clinicians to tailor cancer treatments based on each patient’s genetic profile.
Currently, an estimated 20,000 Ugandans travel to India annually for specialized oncology care, often facing financial strain, emotional stress, and prolonged separation from family. By bringing world-class expertise home, C-Care IHK is changing that narrative.
“Cancer treatment is moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach to highly personalized care,” said Dr. Alicia Adatia of C-Care’s Oncology Department. “Through global partnerships like this, Ugandan patients can access cutting-edge therapies without leaving the country.”
The CME also delved into breakthroughs in targeted therapies and immunotherapy, offering hope for previously hard-to-treat cancers. With investments in advanced diagnostic imaging, multidisciplinary care teams, and specialized infrastructure, C-Care IHK is now equipped to manage complex cases, including blood cancers requiring transplant evaluation and genomic-guided treatment planning.
Dr. Miriam Mutero Musinga, General Manager of C-Care IHK, emphasized the long-term vision: “We are building a healthcare ecosystem rooted in clinical excellence and global collaboration. This partnership strengthens our ability to provide the full spectrum of care—from early detection to advanced treatment—right here in Uganda.”
By combining international expertise with local care, C-Care IHK is positioning Uganda as a regional hub for specialized oncology services, empowering patients to access life-saving treatments closer to home and reducing the reliance on overseas travel.
