The National Unity Platform (NUP) vice president for Western Uganda, Jolly Jacklyn Tukamushaba, has been formally charged, three weeks after her arrest.
Tukamushaba was detained on January 14, ahead of the presidential elections held on January 15, 2026. Her whereabouts remained unknown until she was presented to court.
Conversely, the NUP Deputy President for Northern Uganda, Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru who was arrested from her home on January 15, 2026 has been charged in Gulu Magistrates court.
According to the charge sheet, Tukamushaba, a resident of Kigara ‘A’ village, Kigara Parish, Kamwezi Sub-county in Rukiga District and Zedriga are facing charges of incitement to violence.
Prosecution alleges that in December 2025 and January 2026, at various locations in Western Uganda, including Rukiga, Kabale, and Rukungiri, Tukamushaba allegedly incited people to commit acts of violence, specifically targeting supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) due to their political affiliation.
Tukamushaba joins Butambala County Member of Parliament Muwanga Kivumbi, who also serves as the NUP Vice President for the Central Region, in facing criminal charges. Kivumbi was previously arrested, charged, and remanded over allegations of terrorism.
The alleged incidents, including attacks on a police station and a polling centre, reportedly left seven people dead. Both Tukamushaba and Kivumbi are among a growing number of over 500 NUP supporters charged with offenses including incitement to violence.
