Buganda Road Magistrates Court has dismissed a case against Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and four other activists — Ingrid Turinawe, Phiona Kyabayiza, Faridah Nangonzi, and Shadia Namubiru.
The group had been facing charges of being a public nuisance following their arrest during a protest over the detention of political figures including Dr. Kizza Besigye, lawyer Eron Kiiza, Hajj Obeid Lutale, and other activists. They were later released after spending three weeks in Luzira Prison.
The protest came in response to a Supreme Court ruling that dissolved the General Court Martial, where Besigye was being tried for allegedly conspiring against the Ugandan army. The allegations involved activities reportedly conducted in Nairobi, Kenya, and meetings held in Greece and Switzerland.
During a hearing before Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya, the accused were granted non-cash bail of Shs 500,000 each. Their sureties were ordered to pay a non-cash bond of Shs 1 million.
