A brazen morning robbery near Gwanda Shopping Mall in Kisenyi has led to the arrest of three suspects, police confirmed on Sunday.
The attack, which occurred at about 8:45am on Friday, unfolded in full view of commuters and traders in one of the city centre’s busiest areas. CCTV footage shows a group of men armed with machetes ambushing a man carrying a bag, assaulting him and fleeing with an undisclosed sum of money.
The video, widely shared on social media, sparked public outrage and renewed concerns about safety in Kampala’s commercial hubs.
Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said officers swiftly responded, arresting three suspects and impounding three motorcycles believed to have been used in the getaway.
“Two more suspects have been identified and efforts are underway to apprehend them,” Rusoke said.
The incident adds to growing anxiety over violent street robberies in Kampala, particularly in crowded transport terminals and trading centres. Security agencies acknowledge a recent spike in mugging and snatching cases, blaming a mix of repeat offenders, urban congestion and gaps in surveillance.
In response, authorities have intensified operations in crime-prone “black spots” across the Kampala Metropolitan Area and surrounding districts. In the past few days alone, coordinated crackdowns have resulted in hundreds of arrests as police move to dismantle suspected criminal networks.
For many residents, however, the bold daylight assault in Kisenyi is a stark reminder that insecurity remains an urgent concern in the heart of the city.
