Electoral Commission (EC) is set to nominate the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Yoweri Museveni and two other aspiring presidential candidates ahead of the 2026 elections.

According to the guidelines, an aspirant must be a citizen of Uganda by birth, an adult of 18 years or older, must be registered on the national voters’ register, and show proof of payment of the nomination fee of Shs 20 million.
“Each duly nominated presidential candidate will be given a pickup and police escorts and will be allowed to address the public before leaving the venue,” Justice Simon Byabakama, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, said.
According to Justice Byabakama, any person aspiring to contest for the presidency must fulfill the following requirements: be a citizen of Uganda by birth, a registered voter, 18 years or older, and must have submitted certified copies of academic qualifications confirming they attained a minimum of Advanced Level (A’Level) or its equivalent.

Justice Byabakama emphasized that the nomination venue will be strictly controlled, with access granted only to invited and accredited persons.
Each aspirant will be allowed to enter the nomination venue accompanied by not more than 20 persons, whose names must be submitted in advance.
For transport, only two vehicles will be permitted per aspirant, each carrying no more than 10 people, including the driver. These vehicles must display police-issued stickers.
