The Electoral Commission (EC) has commenced hearings for petitions filed by candidates who were denied nomination for district chairperson, mayoral, and councillor positions.

According to the EC, a total of 60 petitions were submitted following the conclusion of the nomination process last week. The hearings are being presided over by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama.

Justice Byabakama emphasized that petitioners must prove they were deliberately and unfairly denied nomination.

“Where there are justiciable reasons for the denial of nomination, the petition will be dismissed,” he stated.

Many of the complainants claim they were turned away at the last minute, preventing them from completing the nomination process.

However, the EC pointed out that most of these individuals only appeared on the final day of the three-day nomination window, which may have contributed to their disqualification.
