Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has extended appreciation to Uganda’s Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) for their exemplary conduct during the recently concluded village-level elections.

Earlier this month, the EC began the electoral process for Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which includes Older Persons, PwDs, and Youth, starting at the Village/Cell level. Candidate nominations for all three SIGs took place simultaneously from June 2 to June 10, 2025, at Sub-county, Town Council, and Municipal Division headquarters.

The elections were conducted using the lining up method, where voters — members of the designated electoral colleges — expressed their choice by standing behind a candidate’s portrait, symbol, agent, or the candidate themselves.

Justice Byabakama praised participants, especially members of the electoral colleges representing Older Persons and PwDs, for their discipline and cooperation throughout the nomination, campaign, and voting stages.

“The Commission sincerely appreciates the peaceful manner in which the electoral process was conducted at the village level,” he stated.

“Reports from across the country indicate that the elections were held in a calm and orderly environment.” he said.

These early successes mark a positive start to the ongoing SIGs election roadmap and reflect the commitment of citizens to democratic values and inclusive governance.
