Equity Bank Uganda is once again under fire after a customer accused the institution of withdrawing a significant amount of her savings without her permission.

According to a social media post cited by Daily Star, the disgruntled client claimed she had Shs 8 million in her account. However, she was stunned to find only Shs 3.8 million remaining when she recently checked her balance. The woman has since demanded accountability, expressing deep frustration and disbelief.

The bank reportedly explained that the missing funds were used for online purchases—an explanation the customer firmly rejects. She insists her ATM card has always been safely stored and has never been misused.

Following the incident, a social media user who identified herself as the client’s daughter voiced her outrage on platform X (formerly Twitter).

“My mum’s money vanished from @UgEquityBank. They told her it was spent on online shopping. But since she got the ATM card, it’s never left her hands. No one else has used it,” tweeted @Nkesha3.

She has urged authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the unauthorized transactions, not just for her mother, but for other affected clients as well.

“We need an investigation into this issue @BOU_Official @PoliceUg,” she stated.

Despite mounting complaints, many customers feel the bank is dodging accountability, with some accusing Equity Bank of playing a “hide-and-seek” game instead of taking decisive action. These frustrations have fueled an online outcry, particularly on X, where users are demanding greater transparency and responsibility.

Notably, Ugandan journalist and influencer Gabriel Buule has weighed in, offering to spearhead a campaign for justice.

“Hey @Nkesha3, I’m ready to lead a campaign demanding @UgEquityBank refund your mum’s money. If they refuse, I’ll rally 10,000 Ugandans—including myself—to close their accounts,” he posted.

As public pressure mounts, calls for intervention from the Bank of Uganda and the police continue to grow louder, urging a full-scale investigation into the growing controversy.
