Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Cossy Odomel has passed away, Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba has confirmed. He peacefully passed away on the morning of Tuesday 18th February 2025, in India.

Odomel, who served as IGP from 1992 to 1999, joined the Uganda Police Force in 1980 and steadily rose through the ranks to lead the institution.

Expressing his condolences, IGP Byakagaba described Odomel as a dedicated leader who played a significant role in shaping Uganda’s police force.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Inspector General of Police, a distinguished member of the Uganda Police Force who dedicated many years of service and leadership to our organization. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.”

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be released.
