On Friday, the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court remanded four police officers attached to the Flying Squad Unit at Kireka Police Barracks for allegedly robbing businessman John Vian Tumukunde of one kilogram of gold valued at over Shs 380 million, along with $1,000 in cash.
The suspects include; Detective Superintendent James Besigye Kiguuya, Detective Corporals Simon Owona and Pracid Mulangira, and Monday Tibaijuka , were sent to Luzira Prison.
Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Frank Namanya, the four were not allowed to enter pleas, as the charges of aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony are capital offences that can only be tried by the High Court.
Prosecutors allege that on May 9, 2025, in broad daylight on Solent Avenue in Nakawa Division, the officers, armed with pistols and rifles, executed the robbery with chilling precision. The attack is described as a grave betrayal of the very duty they swore to uphold.
The prosecution claims the act was part of a carefully orchestrated operation involving additional suspects still at large. “This wasn’t just theft but a betrayal from within the very ranks meant to protect Ugandans from such violence,” a source close to the investigation said.
State Attorney Odong Martin Awiny informed the court that investigations are ongoing. With more suspects believed to be on the run, the full extent of the conspiracy remains unknown. The accused were remanded to Luzira Prison until June 12.
