The body of Rajiv Ruparelia, the late Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, was brought to his father Sudhir Ruparelia’s residence in Kololo for the final time ahead of his cremation scheduled for 4:00 PM today at the Hindu cremation grounds in Lugogo, Kampala.

Picked up from Uganda Funeral Services in Bukoto, the body was transported under tight security to the family home, where close relatives and friends had gathered for the last rites.

At home, the family conducted Hindu rituals including the offering of rice balls (pindas), flowers, and lighting of an oil lamp—symbols representing the soul’s journey. These rites were performed in preparation for cremation, in line with Hindu tradition.

Later in the day, the body will be transported to Lugogo Cremation Grounds, accompanied by family members chanting prayers. Upon arrival, it will be placed on a funeral pyre or inside the crematorium. After cremation, the ashes will be collected and are traditionally scattered in a sacred river, as part of the final rites.

The mourning period will last 13 days, during which a garlanded photo of Rajiv will be displayed at the family home. Visitors will join the family in prayers and rituals to support the peaceful transition and reincarnation of the soul. During this time, the family will refrain from temple visits and remain in quiet reflection.

A memorial service is typically held on the first anniversary of the passing, to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of the deceased.

Rajiv, aged 35, tragically lost his life in a motor accident on May 3, 2025, near the Busaabala Flyover traffic lights in Makindye Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. His death was confirmed by Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.

At the time of the accident, Rajiv was scheduled to serve as a groomsman at the wedding of Jonathan Bahizi Buteera, son of retired Justice Richard Butera. The ceremony, held earlier today at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, united Jonathan and Liz Mutoni in a service officiated by Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu. Rajiv was one of seven groomsmen for the couple.

Rajiv Ruparelia’s passing marks a profound loss for both his family and Uganda’s business community, where he was known for his energy, ambition, and leadership.
