Joint security forces have raided the offices of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s biggest opposition political party. The raid was confirmed by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the party president.

Earlier, Bobi Wine had expressed concerns over heavy security deployments at both premises, warning that President Yoweri Museveni and his son would be held accountable for any harm that befell him.

“Whatever happens to me, Museveni and his son are responsible. Since yesterday, our home has been patrolled by strange men in civilian clothes who appear to be armed. We have information that they are after my life, as Museveni’s son threatened a few days ago. They have also been trailing and abducting many of our comrades, including members of my security team. Right now, they are raiding our party headquarters,” Bobi Wine said.

“The criminal regime operatives are breaking into our headquarters after blocking all roads to Kavule. They have also raided our School of Leadership in Kamwokya,” the party stated in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Commenting on the raid, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Joel Ssenyonyi, revealed that all staff members were ordered to leave before the security forces stormed the offices.

“After sending away all our staff and everyone present at the premises, the military broke into the NUP offices in Kavule and the NUP School of Leadership in Kamwokya at the same time,” he said.

He further cautioned that, since no party officials were present during the raid, security forces might later claim to have found incriminating materials or even plant evidence to frame the party.

Meanwhile, Fred Nyanzi, NUP’s Head of Mobilization, has resurfaced after four days of alleged abduction.

Police Speaks out

In a statement released earlier today, police said they conducted the search on illegal military training at national unity platform premises.

“Following reports of unauthorized military drills at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Kavule and their premise in Kamwokya in Kampala City, the Uganda Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, has mounted a coordinated security operation,” police said in a statement.

They further said; “Our security personnel are currently conducting searches at the mentioned locations. Further updates on the outcomes of this operation will be provided in due course.”
