The Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has hailed the late Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba as a “selfless leader” and “fearless defender of human rights. The retired Supreme Court Justice and constitutional scholar passed away earlier this week.

In a condolence message addressed to the family in Buziga, Kabaka Mutebi described Kanyeihamba as a friend of mine for many years  and praised his unwavering commitment to justice and the rule of law.

“We join the nation in mourning the passing of a charismatic nationalist and champion of fundamental human rights. As a courageous leader, he consistently advocated for unity in diversity, the rule of law, and good governance—even when it meant standing alone.”the Kabaka said.

Prof. Kanyeihamba, a key figure in drafting Uganda’s 1995 Constitution and a longtime Supreme Court Justice, remained outspoken on issues of governance and democracy well into his retirement.

The Kabaka emphasized that Kanyeihamba’s legacy extended beyond the courtroom.

“His unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and justice earned him a special place in the hearts of many,” he noted, adding that the professor’s mentorship and advocacy had shaped a generation of legal and civic leaders.

He also praised Kanyeihamba’s recognition of the importance of traditional and cultural institutions in national development.

“He emphasized the role of cultural institutions in development, and his deep love for Uganda was evident in everything he did.”

Kabaka Mutebi concluded his tribute by expressing hope that Kanyeihamba’s example will inspire Uganda’s future leaders.

“May young leaders emulate his courage and commitment to speaking the truth,” he said.

Prof. Kanyeihamba is remembered as one of Uganda’s most principled legal minds, a fearless defender of constitutionalism, and a lifelong advocate for justice.
