Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has mourned the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican. According to the Vatican, the Holy Father succumbed to a stroke and heart failure.

The Catholic Church and the Kingdom of Buganda have long shared a close and respectful relationship, rooted in mutual appreciation of cultural values, shared understanding, and a common commitment to the wellbeing of the people.

For generations, the Catholic Church and the Buganda Kingdom have walked side by side in service to the same communities—working to uplift lives through faith, education, healthcare, and social services.

“It is with deep sorrow that we received the sad news of the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, which occurred on April 21, 2025. We convey our heartfelt condolences to Archbishop Luigi Bianco and to the entire Catholic faithful in Uganda and around the world,” the Kabaka said.

The Kabaka recalled his audience with the late Pontiff on November 28, 2015, at Rubaga Cathedral, where they had the opportunity to discuss shared principles and values.

“The passing of this dedicated servant of the Church is not only a sorrowful moment for Catholics, but for all those who cherish humanity, humility, compassion, and unity,” Kabaka Mutebi said.

“As we join in mourning, we also give thanks for the enduring legacy he leaves behind—twelve years of purpose and sacrifice, always embodying the values of service beyond self. He stood as a pillar of moral and spiritual strength. May Almighty God comfort and strengthen all those who are grieving, and may the soul of the departed Holy Father rest in eternal peace,” he added.
