Rwanda has ordered Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, the Daily Star can reliably report.
According to Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belgium has consistently undermined Rwanda, both historically and during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where Belgium has played a controversial role, particularly in actions against Rwanda.
“Rwanda has notified the Government of Belgium of its decision to sever diplomatic relations, effective immediately. This decision follows careful consideration of multiple factors, all linked to Belgium’s persistent neocolonial attitudes,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Led by Paul Kagame, Rwanda further accused Belgium of siding in a regional conflict and systematically mobilizing against Rwanda in various forums, using misinformation to foster hostility toward the country in an attempt to destabilize both Rwanda and the region.
Beyond its historical role in fueling ethnic extremism—contributing to entrenched discrimination, persecution, and ultimately the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi—Belgium has also allowed its territory to be used by groups that deny the genocide and promote genocidal ideology.
“Today’s decision reflects Rwanda’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests and the dignity of its people while upholding the principles of sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect,” the statement added.
Rwanda has declared that all Belgian diplomats must leave the country within 48 hours. In accordance with the Vienna Convention, Rwanda will ensure the protection of the premises, property, and archives of the Belgian diplomatic mission in Kigali.
