Retired Major General Matayo Kyaligonza has paid tribute to his son, Banura Peter, describing him as a determined and accomplished young man whose potential was cut short.
Speaking during a vigil, Kyaligonza said his son had achieved remarkable progress within a short time.
“Sometimes someone becomes better than you. What he managed to achieve, I also tried, but he surpassed me,” he said.
Family members described the deceased as humble and peace-loving. His brother, Patrick Karamagi, said Banura had no known conflicts with anyone.
“He was very soft-spoken. As a family, we are still wondering how he got into politics because he was not confrontational,” Karamagi said.
Kikuube District Woman Member of Parliament, Florence Natumanya, praised the late for his efforts to promote unity and protect the environment, particularly Bugoma Forest.
“He was fighting for Bugoma Forest and unity across political divides. I ask you to pray for Kikuube so we get a leader who can unite us like Banura did,” she said.
Banura died following a hit-and-run accident on April 4, 2026, at Butyamba Village in Kikuube Town Council. He was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace, commonly known as a “drone.”
According to Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the victim was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Investigations are ongoing, and the vehicle has since been impounded,” Rusoke said.
Police have launched a manhunt for the driver as inquiries into the incident continue.
