A suspected explosive device detonated this morning near the Mini-Basilica in Munyonyo, just moments before Martyrs Day prayers were scheduled to begin in honor of the Uganda Martyrs.
According to reports obtained by Daily Star, a counter-terrorism unit from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) swiftly responded and neutralized two armed suspects believed to be behind the attempted attack.
“A UPDF counter-terrorism unit this morning intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale city suburb,” said Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information.
Col. Magezi confirmed that the operation was intelligence-led and emphasized that security forces remain on high alert to ensure that Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption.
He urged the public to stay calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious individuals, objects, or activities to security authorities immediately.
The incident underscores ongoing security concerns as thousands of pilgrims gather across the country to mark Martyrs Day, a major religious and national event in Uganda.
