Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson Banura Peter, son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza , has died following a fatal hit-and-run road crash, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred at Butyamba Village in Kikuube Town Council, where Banura was knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace, commonly referred to as a “drone.”
According to Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the district leader was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
“He was taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Rusoke said.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the crash, prompting police to launch investigations and a manhunt. Authorities have since recovered and impounded the vehicle involved.
“Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with ongoing investigations,” Rusoke added.
Banura’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief from leaders across the country, many describing him as a dedicated and humble public servant.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja paid tribute to the fallen leader, noting his contribution to the development of Kikuube District.
“As the pioneer LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube, he was committed to the progress of the district and the wellbeing of its people. We have lost a very humble man who still had much life ahead of him,” she said.
State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development Balaam Barugahara described Banura as peaceful and deeply patriotic, adding that his death is a major loss to his family, the Obukama bwa Bunyoro Kitara, and the country at large.
“This is a profound loss to his family, the Obukama bwa Bunyoro Kitara, and Uganda as a whole,” Barugahara said.
He also called on motorists, especially public transport drivers, to exercise caution on the roads to prevent similar tragedies.
Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing as the search for the driver continues.
