Hundreds of family members, friends, and members of the Muslim community gathered at the home of former Supreme Mufti Sheikh Siliman Kasule Ndirangwa in Kiraya-Ngoma, Lwengo, to pay their final respects as he was laid to rest.
Sheikh Ndirangwa passed away at the age of 61 after a brief illness at Mengo Hospital. He served as the head of the Kibuli Muslim faction from 2015 to 2021.
Representing the government, Deputy NRM National Vice Chairperson Moses Kigongo urged Muslims to remain committed to their faith and to uphold unity within the community.
“Avoid infighting—it should not be part of our faith. Let’s focus on the Qur’an,” Kigongo said.
In April 2021, Sheikh Ndirangwa stepped down from his leadership role, citing internal conflicts within the Kibuli leadership. In his resignation statement, he called on the new leadership to prioritize unity within the Muslim community, which has, in recent years, been marred by divisions and factionalism.
His resignation came just months after the death of Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata, a prominent and outspoken cleric who served as the spokesperson for the Kibuli faction.
Sheikh Ndirangwa was appointed Supreme Mufti of the Kibuli-based Muslim administration on December 16, 2015, succeeding Sheikh Zubairi Kayongo, who died in April 2014. During his tenure, he was supported by deputies Sheikh Mahmoud Kibaate and Sheikh Habib Kabasa.
