Kampala Woman Member of Parliament, Shamim Malende, is set to undergo surgery at Aga Khan Hospital in Kenya following a deterioration in her health, Daily Star has learned.
Malende was flown to Kenya last week for specialized medical treatment after her condition continued to decline. Prior to this, she had been receiving care at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala, where doctors recommended that she seek further medical attention abroad.
Her current health concerns are believed to stem from an incident in November last year, when she and several other lawmakers were allegedly assaulted by law enforcement officers during the passing of the Coffee Amendment Bill in Parliament.
Before her departure, Malende explained that the medical team at Nsambya Hospital had advised her to consult the specialists who previously treated her in 2022.
“I was recommended by the medical personnel at Nsambya Hospital to seek further treatment from the experts who handled my case in 2022. We decided that I should go to Aga Khan Hospital to receive better medical care,” she said.
She further revealed that she had undergone surgery in the past, but the injuries sustained during the alleged parliamentary assault worsened her condition, and she has not fully recovered since.
