Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has received the Rotary Vocational/Service Award, in recognition of his contribution to advancing statistics and strengthening evidence-based planning in Uganda.

The award was presented by the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda during a ceremony held at Statistics House in Kampala, attended by Rotarians and professionals from across the metropolitan area.

Speaking after receiving the award, Dr Mukiza described the recognition as a reflection of collective effort within UBOS and the broader statistical system.

“This award is not only for me personally, but also speaks to the commitment of the Bureau and the collaboration that drives institutional excellence,” he said.

Dr Mukiza said UBOS remains focused on strengthening the country’s statistical capacity by producing data that is reliable, timely and aligned to national priorities. He noted that statistics are increasingly central to policy formulation, planning and monitoring, placing the Bureau at the heart of government decision-making.

He added that the agency has expanded data production beyond the national level to sub-regional and local administrative units, a move he said is improving planning and service delivery across sectors.

“Statistics are not abstract figures. They directly affect people’s lives by guiding decisions in sectors such as health, education and infrastructure,” he said.

Dr Mukiza also linked data to community service, noting that organisations such as Rotary rely on statistical evidence to design and implement impactful interventions, particularly in health and social services.

The President of the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, Ann Kamugisa, praised Dr Mukiza’s leadership, saying it has strengthened the credibility and visibility of UBOS.

“Under your leadership, UBOS has become a pillar of national planning,” she said.

Delivering the keynote address, Mike Sebalu, the Governor of Rotary District 9213, said statistics remain critical in guiding national development.

“Statistics are not just numbers; they are the foundation for decision-making,” he said, adding that credible data is essential for policy formulation, budgeting and monitoring progress.

He noted that the Rotary Vocational/Service Award is granted following a rigorous selection process, underscoring the significance of Dr Mukiza’s recognition.

The award comes at a time when demand for reliable data is rising, driven by the need for evidence-based planning in a rapidly changing socio-economic environment.

Analysts say institutions such as UBOS are increasingly central to Uganda’s development agenda, as government and partners rely on data to guide investment and policy decisions.
