As Uganda’s political atmosphere intensifies, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, has unveiled his official campaign poster ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

The poster was released earlier today at the NRM party headquarters, coming just weeks after Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, launched his own campaign poster. Kyagulanyi is the presidential flag bearer for the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The 2026 presidential race is shaping up to be a repeat of the 2021 contest, where Museveni defeated Bobi Wine amid widespread political tension and international scrutiny.

On Monday, Bobi Wine officially entered the 2026 race after his party picked up presidential nomination forms from the Electoral Commission. The forms were collected on his behalf by a delegation of senior NUP leaders, including Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, following his endorsement at the NUP delegates’ conference held in June at the party’s Kamwokya training institute.

Meanwhile, the ruling NRM party has reaffirmed Museveni as its presidential candidate. Museveni who has been in power since 1986,  is seeking a seventh term in office. His nomination forms were collected last week by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and First National Vice Chairperson Moses Kigongo.

“He was nominated unopposed within the party. As for those who are claiming otherwise, I don’t know who they are or where they are. The party unanimously endorsed him, based on all the resolutions I’ve received in my office,” said Todwong.

Museveni now joins a growing list of over 160 presidential aspirants who have picked up nomination forms ahead of the 2026 polls. Other contenders from political parties such as the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have also expressed interest in running.

As the electoral season heats up, the impending face-off between Museveni and Bobi Wine is expected to dominate national discourse, reigniting debates about leadership, democracy, and Uganda’s future.

In the previous general elections held on January 14, 2021, Uganda had 18,103,603 registered voters across 34,684 polling stations. Voter turnout stood at 57.2%, with 10,350,819 Ugandans casting their ballots.

Museveni secured a sixth term with 6,042,898 votes (58.38%), while Bobi Wine emerged as his closest challenger with 3,631,437 votes (35.08%). The 2021 race featured 11 presidential candidates and was marked by allegations of irregularities and restricted opposition activity.

Museveni’s win solidified his position as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, with his presidency now approaching the 40-year mark.

With the 2026 elections fast approaching, all eyes are once again on Uganda’s political landscape, where generational shifts and calls for change are competing with a long-standing incumbent’s grip on power.
