At least 33 distinguished Ugandans are set to receive medals for their sacrifice during the 1986 Bush War, which brought the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to power, Daily Star has learned.
The medals will be conferred by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during the 40th National Resistance Movement (NRM) / National Resistance Army (NRA) Day anniversary celebrations, according to the Minister for the Presidency, Babirye Milly Babalanda.
Held under the theme, “Tribute to the Patriots Who Ushered in a Fundamental Change,” the celebrations will take place at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
“The day will be officiated by Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, who will be accompanied by many distinguished guests from within the country and abroad,” she said.
This year’s celebrations come at a time when President Museveni has just been voted into office for his fifth term, following a resounding victory of 71 percent.
The celebrations will also feature a special military parade by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda Prisons Service, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
January 26 marks the day when gallant NRA fighters captured Kampala, ending the rule of the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA), which was led by the late Gen. Tito Okello Lutwa. The leader of the NRA fighters, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, was subsequently sworn in as Uganda’s ninth President.
