The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), chaired by its chairman, President Yoweri Museveni, has endorsed Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, respectively.

The two legislators were endorsed during a top CEC meeting held last evening at State House. The decision is expected to be communicated to the NRM parliamentary caucus ahead of the voting day.

Among and Tayebwa, who were elected unopposed in the just-concluded elections, are credited with leading massive mobilization efforts for President Museveni and the ruling party.

Tayebwa is particularly credited for playing a key role in convincing several National Unity Platform (NUP) aspirants to step aside and support the NRM, contributing to the party’s success in the western region.

At least 250 NUP leaders from Kyenjojo, Bundibugyo, and Bunyangabo districts—led by three parliamentary candidates and several local government flag bearers—defected on December 24.

The defectors cited the party’s lack of a clear agenda for the future of the country as the reason for their departure.

Anita Among has been the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda since 2022. She also serves as the elected Member of Parliament for Bukedea District Woman Constituency, a position she previously held in the 10th Parliament.

Thomas Tayebwa has been a Member of Parliament since 2016 and has served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament since 2022. He previously served as Government Chief Whip after being appointed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
