Mbale district National Resistance Movement [NRM] Chairman Moses Wambogo, has suspended all ongoing joint campaigns in the district following an accident that claimed two lives and left several others critically injured in Bukiende Sub-County, Bungokho South.
The accident occurred yesterday when a Fuso truck carrying supporters of Agnes Wazemwa Wabuyi a parliamentary candidate for Bungokho South, lost control and veered off the road.
Wambogo, a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced the immediate suspension of campaign activities in the area.
“We cannot continue like this. We have lost precious lives today because of negligence,” said Wambogo.
“From now on, no candidate should ferry supporters on open trucks or motorcycles. We must prioritize safety over everything else,” he added.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was overloaded with supporters and a public address system, failed to brake properly before crashing into a nearby bush. Two supporters reportedly died on the spot, while many others sustained serious injuries.
The injured were rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention. Authorities in Mbale district have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of their families.
When contacted, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and noted that a full report was still being compiled.
Traffic police have vowed to enforce stricter safety regulations during political rallies to prevent similar tragedies.
