Ofwono Opondo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, has officially resigned, announcing his intention to join elective politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I will be handing in my resignation letter to the Uganda Media Centre tomorrow. I will officially hand over office on Monday,” Opondo said on Thursday night.

His departure comes just three months before the expiry of his current three-year contract. Opondo, who succeeded Fred Opolot in 2013, has consistently served under renewable three-year terms.

Sources reveal that Opondo plans to contest for the newly established Eastern Uganda Elderly MP seat in the upcoming 2026–2031 parliamentary term.

“I was appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on July 1, 2013. It’s been a fulfilling 12 years,” he remarked.

Before this role, Opondo served as Director of Information and Public Relations at the Movement Secretariat starting in 2002, succeeding Winnie Byanyima. Since 2003, he has also been the spokesperson for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), playing pivotal roles in President Museveni’s election task forces from 2001 to 2016.
