Opondo Opondo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, has declared his intention to join elective politics ahead of the 2026 general elections, Daily Star has established.

Opondo made the announcement during Capital Gang, a weekly political talk show hosted by Oscar Semweya Musoke on Capital FM. Development comes barely three months to expiry of his three years contract. Opondo, who replaced Fred Opolot in 2013, has always been appointed on three years contract.

“I will soon be submitting my resignation letter to the President. My campaign funds are ready. I’m going to take on Nandala Mafabi, and I have everything it takes to defeat him,” he stated.

Daily Star has learned that Opondo plans to contest for the newly created Eastern Uganda Elderly MP seat for the 2026–2031 term.

“I was appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on July 1, 2013. It’s been a good 12 years,” he noted.

Opondo previously served as Director of Information and Public Relations at the Movement Secretariat from 2002, replacing Winnie Byanyima. He has also been the spokesperson for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) since 2003, and played key roles in President Museveni’s election task forces from 2001 through 2016.
