At least 1,300 members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have picked expression of interest and nomination forms as the party kicks off preparations for the 2026 general elections.

Hundreds of party supporters and aspirants thronged the NRM Electoral Commission offices to express their intent to contest for party flag bearer positions for Member of Parliament (MP) and Local Council V (LCV) Chairperson seats.

According to the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr. Tanga Odoi, a total of 1,303 aspirants had picked nomination forms by the close of business on Monday, June 2, 2025.

The nomination exercise, which officially began on Monday, will run until June 15, 2025, at the NRM Electoral Commission offices located at Plot 13, Kyadondo Road in Kampala.

The opening day of the exercise saw several high-profile NRM leaders—including ministers and parliamentary leaders collect nomination forms in a bid to retain their seats in the upcoming elections.

Among them were Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, and Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua.

In a notable development, Kilak North MP Anthony Akol, who recently defected from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to join the NRM, also picked up expression of interest forms to run under the ruling party’s ticket.

The large turnout on the first day signals heightened political activity as the NRM gears up for a competitive internal selection process ahead of the 2026 elections.
