At least 19 assailants are confirmed to have been killed  following a foiled attack on Canon Apollo Core Primary Teachers College (PTC) in Fort Portal City and other areas in western Uganda.

In the early hours of November 1, 2025, coordinated attacks were carried out by armed assailants across multiple locations within the Rwenzori West and Rwenzori East policing regions.

In Rwenzori West, the attackers targeted several districts including Bunyangabu, Bundibugyo (specifically Kakhuuka Parish in Sindira Sub-county), Fort Portal City—around Nyakasura School and Canon Apollo Core PTC—and parts of Kabarole District.

Meanwhile, in Rwenzori East, the group launched simultaneous attacks on Kasese Police Barracks and Rugendabara Police Station.

According to police, several assailants were put out of action while many others were arrested. Although some police officers sustained injuries during the encounters, no fatalities were reported among the security forces.

Preliminary reports indicate that the machete-wielding attackers attempted to storm Canon Apollo Core PTC early Saturday morning but were intercepted by security forces, who neutralized five of them on the spot.

SP Pius Bitembo, the District Police Commander (DPC) for Fort Portal North Division, said the group had earlier been sighted advancing from Karangura in Kabarole District around 6:50 a.m., armed with pangas and moving toward Bukuuku.

Earlier today, SSP Alex Muhumuza, Deputy Regional Police Commander for Rwenzori East, confirmed that operations were still ongoing.

“From yesterday, we have arrested 19 are confirmed to have been put out of action, while 40 others are in custody for further screening,” he said.

Security forces have since intensified operations across the region to ensure stability and prevent any further attacks.
